Ukrainian Traditional Patterns (Cross-Stitch)

The history of traditional Ukrainian embroidered clothing dates back to ancient times.

Even before the formation of Kyivan Rus, people had a tradition of wearing embroidered shirts. Festive shirts were decorated with unique patterns, while everyday shirts were made from coarse fabric and often featured simple, modest designs.

Traditionally, embroidered shirts were made from coarse homespun fabrics, such as hemp or linen.

Ukrainian embroidery shares many similarities with the traditional clothing of other East Slavic peoples. These similarities can be seen both in garment construction and in ornamental patterns.

In the Poltava region, white-on-white embroidery was traditionally used. Patterns were usually created with white thread on white fabric, sometimes complemented with red or gray threads. White designs were often highlighted with colored or black outlines.

In the Poltava region, a white pattern on white fabric was adopted. Very often it was a white surface. Sometimes there were patterns made with red or gray threads. The white pattern was surrounded by colored or black lines.

Bukovinian embroidery is known for its rich color palette, including black, yellow, and orange shades. Traditional shirts were decorated with silk and wool threads, as well as intricate bead embroidery. Animal motifs were among the popular elements of Bukovinian patterns.

South of Ukraine

Vinnytsia embroidered shirts are characterized by a combination of different embroidery techniques, including satin stitch, hemstitch, and cross-stitch.

Lviv region

Embroidery from the Lviv region combines several traditional embroidery techniques. The ornamental elements are arranged with generous spacing, giving the designs a light, refined, and airy look.

Zaporizhzhya region

Traditional embroidered shirts from the Zaporizhzhia region are worked mainly in red and black, with red being the dominant color. The patterns are typically bold and simple, featuring large geometric ornaments complemented by traditional floral and plant motifs.

Today, traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt patterns are still handcrafted using centuries-old techniques, while modern machine embroidery makes these timeless designs more accessible for everyday wear.
